NHL: Washington 5, Montreal 4 (OT)

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Alexander Ovechkin scored four goals Thursday, including the game-winner in overtime, to boost the Washington Capitals past Montreal 5-4.

The winning goal came with 1:26 left in the extra session and increased Ovechkin's league-leading goal total to 43. He also assisted on Washington's other goal, which came from Victor Kozlov at 4:35 of the second period.

Netminder Olaf Kolzig stopped 17 of 21 shots, but allowed a goal by Guillaume Latendresse just 33 seconds before the end of regulation that knotted the score at 4-4 to send the contest into the overtime.

Latendresse scored twice and assisted on a goal by Sergei Kostitsyn in the second.

Kostitsyn also had an assist, while Cristobal Huet was beaten five times on 38 shots for the Canadiens, whose three-game winning streak ended.

Washington lost the opener of the home-and-home set 4-0 Tuesday.
