Leyritz pleads innocent to manslaughter

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Former New York Yankee Jim Leyritz pleaded innocent Thursday in Florida to an additional charge of DUI manslaughter in an incident last month.

Leyritz was accused of being behind the wheel of a Ford Expedition on Dec. 27 -- his 44th birthday -- when it struck and killed Fredia Veitch, 30, of Plantation, Fla., at a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., intersection.

His blood alcohol level was 0.13 or 0.14, police toxicology reports indicated.

Leyritz entered the Broward Circuit courtroom in a dark suit, his head bowed, and said nothing outside his arraignment hearing, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said. He remained free on $11,000 bond.

Leyritz played 11 seasons in the major leagues -- mostly with the Yankees -- before retiring in 2000.
