
VINA DEL MAR, Chile, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Fernando Gonzalez" class="tpstyle">Chilean Fernando Gonzalez advanced Tuesday in first-round play at the Movistar Open, the ATP's first clay-court event of 2008.
Gonzalez, who won the title in 2002 and 2004 and was the runner-up in 2005, defeated fellow Paul Capdeville" class="tpstyle">Chilean Paul Capdeville 7-5, 6-3.
Italian Fabio Fognini, ranked 104th in the world, upset second-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela" class="tpstyle">Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chilean wild card Hans Podlipnik, who was making his ATP debut.
Defending champion Luis Horna of Peru beat fifth-seeded Argentine Agustin Calleri 6-4, 6-4. These two met in the first round of the Australian Open, with Calleri winning in four sets.
