NEWPORT, R.I., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Former men's tennis star Michael Chang Wednesday was among the 2008 inductees for the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport, Rhode Island.
Chang was one of only three American men to capture the French Open singles title.
His two-week run at Roland Garros in 1989 was highlighted by a victory against top-seeded Ivan Lendl in five sets in the fourth round and a five-set win against No. 3 seed Stefan Edberg in the final.
"It is truly an honor to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame," Chang said.
During a 16-year career, he captured 34 singles titles while qualifying for 24 tournament finals.
He was among the top 10 men's players for seven years running and played for the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1989-90 and 1996-97, recording an overall 8-4 singles record.
Also included in the 2008 tennis hall of fame class were executive Mark McCormack and publisher Gene Scott, both posthumously.
