Bonds wants indictment thrown out

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds' attorneys Wednesday sought to have a federal grand jury indictment against the slugger dismissed.

The San Jose Mercury News reported Bonds' attorneys said in a 31-page motion the indictment's allegations are "so vague that it is simply impossible to be certain what untruths Mr. Bonds is alleged to have uttered."

Previous federal documents said Bonds told a grand jury he did not knowingly take performance-enhancing drugs supplied by Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative.

His former mistress, Kimberly Bell, has claimed BALCO supplied Bonds the performance-enhancing drugs and that he told her he used them.

Baseball's all-time home run leader also was named in a recent report on performance enhancers by a panel headed by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell.

Bonds is a free agent because no team has made him an offer.

The San Francisco Giants declined a new contract at the end of the 2007 season.
