Mattingly no longer Dodgers' hitting coach

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers said Tuesday that Don Mattingly has stepped aside as their hitting coach, two months after taking the position.

The Dodgers named Mike Easler to replace Mattingly as their hitting coach for the 2008 season.

Mattingly, who said family reasons played a role in the decision, will remain with the club in the role of special adviser and coach. He originally took the job after Joe Torre was named the Dodgers' new manager Nov. 16. Torre said then that Mattingly and Larry Bowa, who had been on his staff with the New York Yankees, would join him in Los Angeles.

Mattingly ended a 14-year major league playing career in 1995. He spent three years as the Yankees' hitting coach before serving as bench coach under Torre last season in New York.
