San Diego QB played with torn ligament

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers disclosed Monday he played in the AFC Championship game with a fully torn right anterior cruciate ligament.

Rivers said he underwent arthroscopic surgery on the same knee a day after the Chargers defeated Indianapolis in the divisional round.

The four-year veteran will have surgery on the torn ACL in the coming weeks. It usually takes four to six months to recover from this type of operation.

It was reported before the AFC title game with New England Sunday that Rivers had a partially torn ACL, an injury that forced him to the sidelines for much of the team's victory over the Colts.

He was listed as doubtful for the Patriots game, but played the entire contest, completing 19 of 37 passes for 211 yards in a 21-12 loss.
