Nadal moves into Australian third round

MELBOURNE, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Rafael Nadal posted a solid straight-set victory Wednesday in second-round play at the Australian Open.

The other Top 10-seeded players on the card Wednesday also won straight-set wins but 11th-seeded Tommy Robredo was ousted by Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. Fish, unseeded, made it to the quarterfinals in last year's Australian Open.

Nadal blitzed Florent Serra 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 and next goes against 28th-seeded Gilles Simon, whose second-round win was a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 romp over Rainer Schuettler.

Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko had little trouble with Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-0, 6-3; sixth-seeded Andy Roddick claimed a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Michael Berrer and No. 8-seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

Also Wednesday, No. 14-seeded Mikhail Youzhny advanced over Andreas Seppi 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); 20th-seeded Ivo Karlovic stopped Dudi Sela 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1; 23rd-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu rallied to beat Paul Capdeville 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-4, 6-4; and 24th seeded Jarkko Nieminen eliminated Jesse Levine 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

Marc Gicquel earned a shot at Davydenko when, after taking a 6-2, 3-6 7-6 (7-5), 2-1 lead, 26th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka retired.

Other winners Wednesday were 29th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber; 31st-seeded Igor Andreev; Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Stefan Koubek.
