Five share 1st-round Hope Classic lead

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Joe Durant, Shigeki Maruyama, Mathew Goggin, Omar Uresti and Tim Petrovic shared the first-round lead Wednesday in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in California.

Each shot a 7-under-par 65 in a tournament played on four golf courses.

Durant, who won the Hope in 2001, had two eagles in his round.

Uresti played the PGA West Course, the other co-leaders were on the Classic Club course.

Seven players, including Kenny Perry Steve Elkington and Lee Janzen were a stroke back at 66.

Defending champion Charley Hoffman shot a 68.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are among top stars not entered in the event.
