GLENS FALLS, N.Y., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Johnny Podres, who was the most valuable player in the 1955 World Series, has died at the age of 75.
Podres died Sunday night at Glens Falls Hospital in New York from complications from a leg infection.
Podres won two games in the 1955 World Series -- the only world championship won by the Dodgers in Brooklyn. His eight-hit shutout of the New York Yankees in Game 7 clinched the series for the team and the MVP award for Podres.
He was selected to the All-Star team four times over a 15-season career that included time spent with the Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres. Podres had a career record of 148-116. He retired at the age of 36 in 1969 and had a successful career as a pitching coach.
