CHICAGO, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The Chicago Blackhawks have given a three-year contract extension to defenseman Brent Sopel, who joined the team in September, the Blackhawks said Thursday.

"Brent has been a key addition to the Blackhawks because of his play on the ice and his leadership in the locker room," General Manager Dale Tallon said. "He contributes in all situations and is a positive influence on our rapidly maturing defensive corps."

Terms of the new deal were not disclosed, in accordance with club policy.

Sopel, 31, signed as a free agent Sept. 28, and has appeared in 33 games this season.
