NHL: Detroit 4, Dallas 1

DETROIT, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- The first goal of the season for Dallas Drake Wednesday highlighted Detroit's 4-1 whipping of the Dallas Stars.

Drake scored for the first time in what is his second tenure with the Red Wings, having played with the club in the 1993-94 season. His goal 4:32 into the third period gave Detroit a 3-0 advantage.

Henrik Zetterberg, who returned to the lineup Wednesday after being sidelined for five games with back spasms, added two assists.

Detroit reached 30 victories in its first 41 games, improving what is the best start in franchise history.

Daniel Cleary had a goal and an assist for Detroit and Chris Osgood made 23 saves.

Loui Eriksson scored the only goal for Dallas, which has dropped two straight.

This was the first of four meetings this year between the division leaders. They will play again Sunday.
