Two-time champ Hewitt wins Adelaide opener

ADELAIDE, Australia, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Two-time champion and top seed Lleyton Hewitt was among Tuesday's opening-round winners at the Adelaide International in Australia.

Hewitt, a former world No. 1, defeated Israeli Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-2. Hewitt won here in his hometown in 1998 and 2000 and was the runner-up in 1999.

Hewitt's second-round opponent will be Argentine Jose Acasuso, who beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Second-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu defeated countryman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-2), 7-5; third-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen beat Slovakian qualifier Ivo Klec 6-2, 6-4; and sixth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
