Top-seed Czech first-round winner

GOLD COAST, Australia, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova was a first-round winner Tuesday at the Australian Women's Hardcourts.

Vaidisova dropped the first set against Australian wild card Casey Dellacqua before charging back for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 victory. Vaidisova's second-round opponent Wednesday will be German Tatjana Malek, who beat Japan's Aiko Nakamura 7-5, 6-3 Tuesday.

Chinese Na Li upset seventh-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka earned a slot in the quarterfinals by beating Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak 6-4, 6-2.
