DALLAS, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Mike Modano scored the only goal in the shootout and the Dallas Stars overcame a hat trick by Paul Kariya Saturday to beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4.

Modano also scored once in regulation. Niklas Hagman, Stu Barnes and Mike Ribeiro scored once each, Jeff Halpern had two assists and Mike Smith stopped 27 of 31 shots for the Stars -- who have won four straight and eight of nine overall.

St. Louis also got one goal from David Perron and two assists each from Keith Tkachuk and Lee Stempniak. Hannu Toivonen allowed four goals on 26 shots for the Blues, who have lost four in a row.

In the final minute of regulation, the Blues pulled Toivonen in favor of an extra skater and Kariya completed the hat trick by scoring his 11th goal this season with 10.7 seconds left.
