MELBOURNE, Austria, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Samantha Stosur, Australia's No. 1 women's tennis player, has withdrawn from next month's Australian Open due to a lack of preparation time.
The 23-year-old Stosur was unable to compete for most of the last half of the 2007 season due to a viral illness, and just resumed training three weeks ago.
"I am very disappointed I won't be able to compete during the Australian summer," Stosur said. "I have been back training for the last three weeks, but I've realized that I won't be fully ready to compete. I love competing at home, which makes the decision not to play especially hard, but I need concentrate on the long-term goal of getting my health and fitness 100 percent again, so I don't want to start competing again until I'm fully ready."
Tournament officials said Stosur was expected to continue her training on the Gold Coast.
