PITTSBURGH, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh's Willie Parker, the NFL's leading rusher, was placed on injured reserve Monday, ending the running back's season.
Parker was injured on the Steelers' second offensive play Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. He suffered a broken right fibula.
Najeh Davenport filled for Parker and gained 123 yards on 24 carries against the Rams. He is expected to be the team's starting running back the rest of the season.
Pittsburgh signed Verron Haynes to fill Parker's roster spot. He spent five seasons with the Steelers before being cut during the preseason this year.
Parker was voted to his second consecutive Pro Bowl this season and has 1,316 rushing yards, 5 yards ahead of San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson, who had a game Monday night at home against Denver.
