ATLANTA, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Three pit bulls, two males and a female, owned by former Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick have been sent to a shelter in Suwanee, Ga.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the dogs rode for more than 12 hours after they were picked up at three animal shelters in Virginia and Washington on Thursday.

Joan Sammond, executive director of the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the newspaper the rescue group agreed to take in three of the surviving 47 dogs seized from Vick's Surry County, Va., home in June.

Sammond said since word got out her organization received several dogs involved in Vick's dogfighting ring a number of people have contacted the shelter seeking to adopt them. "We want people to adopt them because they want a pet," Sammond said.

The adoption fee is $250 for spaying and neutering, all shots, worming, necessary health tests, and micro-chipping.

Vick pleaded guilty Aug. 27 to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge and is serving a 23-month prison term.
