SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Peter Mueller scored the only goal of the shootout Thursday, giving Phoenix a 3-2 victory over San Jose.
The Coyotes completed a season-long, six-game road trip with a 5-1 record thanks in part to Shane Doan, who scored shorthanded with 42 seconds left to force overtime.
Mueller bested Evgeni Nabokov in the shootout while the Coyotes' Ilya Bryzgazov stopped 34 shots in regulation.
It was the first Phoenix win over San Jose in nine tries.
San Jose missed a chance to move into a share of first place in the Pacific Division. First-place Dallas lost earlier in the evening.
All the regulation scoring came in the third period with Mike York putting Phoenix in front just 33 seconds into the stanza. Torrey Mitchell and Jeremy Roenick then produced goals for the Sharks.
