SAN DIEGO, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Darrell Mack's second touchdown run with 1:27 left Thursday gave Utah a 10-point lead and the Utes held on to down Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl 35-32.
The game was the first of 32 collegiate bowl contests over a 19-day period that will end with Ohio State meeting LSU for the national championship.
Navy took a 17-7 lead early in the second half on a 43-yard run by Eric Kettani, but the Utes scored 21 straight points to take control. Jereme Brooks ran 23 yards for a touchdown, Brian Johnson threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Derrek Richards and Johnson then tacked on a 19-yard touchdown run.
The Midshipmen cut their deficit to three points only to have Mack score on a one-yard run to give Utah a 35-25 lead. Navy then scored with 17 seconds to play on a 58-yard pass from Kaipo-Noa Kaheku-Enhada to Zerbin Singleton, but the Midshipmen could not recover the ensuing onside kick.
Utah, which tied for third in the Mountain West Conference, wound up its season at 9-4. Navy finished 8-5.
