Soccer's Evans questioned in rape case

MANCHESTER, England, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Irish soccer player Jonny Evans was questioned by police Wednesday in the British city of Manchester for a rape that allegedly occurred at a local hotel.

The Manchester United defender had been at the Great John Street Hotel along with 34 of his fellow team members the night of the reported rape, leading police to bring him in for questioning, The Times of London reported.

The 35 players had been at the hotel on Monday night celebrating their annual Christmas party, but the revelry came to end early Tuesday night when police arrived.

The boyfriend of the victim had contacted police regarding the alleged rape and the woman provided police with an initial statement.

Evans' questioning by police and release on bail marked the most recent controversy surrounding the young soccer player.

Shortly after joining Manchester United this year, Evans became embroiled in a conflict between his fellow Northern Ireland squad members Keith Gillespie and George McCartney, the newspaper said.
