UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Maxim Afinogenov scored with 2:17 remaining in the third period Wednesday, delivering Buffalo a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.
Buffalo has won four straight and five out of six.
Derek Roy scored the other Buffalo goal and a busy Ryan Miller stopped 42 shots.
New York's goal came from Brendan Witt. The Islanders have lost two straight and three out of four.
Witt tied things at 3:50 in the third and the game appeared headed for overtime before Afinogenov produced the winning shot.
He took a cross-ice pass from Brian Campbell and sent a one-timer under the left arm of Rick DiPietro. The goal came just seconds after New York defenseman Freddy Meyer had exited the penalty box.
The teams have split their four meetings this season.
