Kevin Sumlin named Houston football coach

HOUSTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Kevin Sumlin, who held various jobs on the Oklahoma coaching staff for the past five years, was named head football coach Friday at the University of Houston.

Sumlin, 43, succeeds Art Briles, who left to become head coach at Baylor.

Sumlin was Oklahoma's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2006-07, and prior to that was special teams coordinator and tight ends coach for the Sooners.

"As I spoke with people around the country about Kevin, he is very highly regarded by his peers, by head coaches, by assistant coaches and by athletic directors," Houston Athletic Director Dave Maggard said.

Sumlin takes over a team that was 34-28 in five seasons under Briles.
