Fehr says union denied preview of report

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Donald Fehr complained Thursday that Major League Baseball players had not been given an advance look at the results of an investigation into baseball drug use.

Fehr, executive director of the MLB Players' Association, said his organization often asked during the investigation by former Sen. George Mitchell, D-Maine, to be able to study the report before it was released.

"We were not afforded that opportunity," Fehr said. "I think in this context that is extraordinarily unusual in a collective bargaining context. Doing that in and of itself says something about the bargaining relationship. They did what they did."

Fehr said he received a copy of Mitchell's report one hour prior to its release Thursday.

Five hours after the report was released, Fehr held a news conference and said he still had not had a chance to study the findings fully. He said the current baseball drug testing program is working.

"The program today is a strong and effective one and has even been improved in the two years since it has been announced," he said. "So far as I can tell, the report does not suggest that the program is failing to pick up any steroid use which is possible to detect."
