
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Free-agent outfielder Aaron Rowand Wednesday agreed to a five-year contract with the San Francisco Giants.
No dollar figure was disclosed.
Rowand, 30, had his best major league season in 2007 with a .309 batting average, and career-highs in home runs (27), RBI (89), hits (189), runs (105) and doubles (45) for Philadelphia.
He led all National League centerfielders with a .995 fielding percentage, was credited with 11 assists, and earned first Gold Glove to help the Phillies claim the National League East crown.
His seven-year big league career began in 2000 with the White Sox and played two seasons in Chicago.
"I did my job and listened," Giants General Manager Brian Sabean told The San Jose Mercury News after Rowand signed, and after saying he would not trade pitchers Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. "I said before that's what we have to do as a last-place team. I never put either pitcher on the market or said I would trade either pitcher."
