CHICAGO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Former Chicago coach Mike Ditka has dissolved the Mike Ditka Hall of Fame Assistance Fund, designed to help needy former NFL players with economic assistance.
A report by USA Today last week noted federal and Illinois tax records show the fund paid out only $57,000 to former players in need of financial assistance from a total of $1.3 million collected with $315,000 in expenses.
Ditka was criticized harshly for making minimum payouts and for large expenditures on charity golf tournaments.
"There's a lot of truth in that (USA Today) report," he told the Chicago Sun-Times following a news conference Tuesday in Minneapolis to announce the dissolution of the fund. "The expenses on the golf outing were too much at the start, and that bothers me, too. But it takes a lot of work to put those things on."
The fund projected it would make $890,000 in grants to needy football Hall of Fame members or their families in its first three years.
