ACC to move football championship

GREENSBORO, N.C., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Atlantic Coast Conference officials said Wednesday the league's next four football championship games will be played in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C.

Tampa will be the site of the title game in 2008 and 2009 with Charlotte hosting the event the next two years.

The sites were agreed to by a unanimous vote of the league's athletic directors and faculty representatives.

"We are extremely excited about the future of the ACC football championship game at these sites," Commissioner John Swofford said. "Both Tampa Bay and Charlotte are tremendous destinations in terms of their football venue, community support and partnership with the Atlantic Coast Conference."

Since the league expanded to 12 schools in 2005 and became eligible to hold a championship game, the title contest has been played in Jacksonville, Fla. But crowds have dwindled year by year.

This month, the championship game pitting Virginia Tech against Boston College drew only 52,212 fans.
