KANSAS CITY, Mo., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Free agent outfielder Jose Guillen Thursday reached a reported three-year, $33.6 million contract with the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals decided to take a chance on Guillen despite the fact he could face a suspension from Major League Baseball for his alleged involvement in the purchase of steroids and human growth hormone worth a reported $19,000.
"He's a middle-of-the-lineup guy, and I like our chances of protecting him and giving him pitches to hit," Manager Trey Hillman told the Kansas City Star from the site of the Winter Baseball Meetings in Nashville, Tenn. "I'm excited we're getting a guy who has sock and passion."
Last season while with Seattle, the 31-year-old Guillen batted .290 with 23 home runs and 99 RBI.
The Mariners decided earlier this off-season not to offer him a contract for 2008.
MLB.com reported the Major League Baseball Players Association is negotiating with MLB officials on a possible 10-day to 15-day suspension.
