LSU gives Les Miles a contract extension

BATON ROUGE, La., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- LSU football coach Les Miles Thursday signed a contract extension through the 2012 season.

The new deal updates the one he signed in January 2005, and was approved Thursday afternoon following a hastily called meeting of some of the school's Board of Supervisors.

Miles was rumored to be a likely contender for the same job at Michigan, his alma mater.

"I appreciate this contract very much," Miles told the board, which gave him a standing ovation. "I look forward to many years as LSU's coach."

Reports have said Miles will be paid between $3.2 million and $3.5 million annually.

The full board is expected to approve the deal Friday.

Miles leads the Tigers against Ohio State in the national title game Jan. 7 at New Orleans' Superdome.

LSU beat Tennessee 21-14 Saturday to capture the Southeastern Conference crown.
