A-10 Commissioner Linda Bruno resigns

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Linda Bruno Wednesday announced her resignation after 13 years in the post.

Bruno was named the conference's first woman commissioner June 14, 1994. She was responsible for the league's expansion to 14 schools and negotiated the most lucrative and extensive television contracts in the league's 32-year history.

Her resignation is effective June 30, 2008.

"After almost a decade-and-a-half with the Atlantic 10, I've decided it's time for new challenges," she said in a statement. "The league has made tremendous strides both on the field of play and off. We have strengthened our membership, strengthened our commitment to excel, and strengthened the future of the Atlantic 10."

During her tenure, women's rowing, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and women's lacrosse were added to the conference's championship series, while officiating bureaus were created for baseball, field hockey, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball.

Bruno became commissioner at the peak of the A-10's men's basketball prominence in the mid-1990s.
