MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Minnesota Timberwolves Coach Randy Wittman was set to have back surgery Wednesday.
Wittman was to miss the Wolves' game against the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night.

"This is a situation that has been progressively getting worse," Wittman said. "The doctors said that in order to coach the remainder of the year, that it would be in my best interest to have the back surgery as soon as possible. I wish I could be out there tonight, but I know Jerry (Sichting) and the coaching staff will do a great job."
A decision on when Wittman will return to the bench won't be made until after the procedure.
