Bo Pelini named coach at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Bo Pelini, a former Nebraska defensive coordinator, was named head coach of the Cornhuskers Sunday, replacing the fired Bill Callahan.

Pelini, 39, returns to Nebraska from LSU, where he was defensive coordinator for three seasons. He had the same position at Nebraska in 2003.

Callahan was let go Nov. 24 after a 5-7 season.

"We need a head coach with strong defensive credentials and great leadership," said Tom Osborne, Nebraska's interim athletic director and former coach. "We were also looking for someone who can inspire confidence and get players to play with great effort. And, of course, we also wanted our new head coach to understand our traditions, including the importance of our walk-on program and the importance of football in this state."

Pelini's coaching experience includes stints on the defensive staffs of the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers in the NFL.

Broncos QB Hackney charged with DUI

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Darrell Hackney, the third-string quarterback for the Denver Broncos, faces drunken driving charges after being arrested in Colorado.

Englewood police spokesman Brad Johnson said when the 24-year-old NFL player was stopped this weekend, the arresting officer had probable cause to take him into custody, The Denver Post reported Sunday.

After being processed and released Saturday, the former University of Alabama-Birmingham standout traveled with the Broncos for a Sunday game in Oakland, Calif., which the Raiders won 34-20.

His arrest marked the second time in the past two months that a member of the Broncos has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Brandon Marshall was arrested Oct. 22 in Denver for suspicion of drunken driving, the Post said.

If convicted, both players could face mandatory suspensions from the league.

U.S. ends up with 4-1 edge in Davis Cup

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The Davis Cup champion U.S. team and Russia split two singles matches in Portland, Ore., Sunday, ending the competition with a 4-1 advantage for the Americans.

The Sunday matches had no bearing on the final result, as the American team had already clinched the cup in the best-of-five competition.

Russia's Igor Andreev beat U.S. doubles ace Bob Bryan 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and James Blake of the United States topped Dmitry Tursunov 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the last matches.

The United States has won the Davis Cup 32 times.

Other members of the American team were captain Patrick McEnroe, Andy Roddick and Mike Bryan.
