Osborne is a coach again -- for a while

LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Seventy-year-old Tom Osborne, Nebraska's interim athletic director, is now the Cornhuskers' interim football coach as well.

The new title is only temporary for the man who walked the sidelines for nearly a quarter-century, coaching the Huskers to 255 wins and three national championships.

Osborne became interim AD in October. On Wednesday, he designated himself interim coach, succeeding the fired Bill Callahan, so he could, under NCAA rules, do some off-campus recruiting until a full-time coach is hired.

In a report on the Nebraska football Web site Thursday, Osborne said the search for a new coach "is pretty much on track."

Callahan was fired by Osborne following a 5-7 season. He had an overall record of 27-22.

The Cornhushers, for only the second time in 39 seasons, won't go to a bowl game this year.
