HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The New York Jets Wednesday released veteran fullback Darian Barnes, who had been on the inactive roster for four games.

Barnes was signed as a free agent before the season. He was expected to be the lead blocker for running back Thomas Jones but didn't play in six of the team's 11 games, and two tight ends were given the blocking assignments.

"If you're not contributing on a regular basis that makes it hard to be active consistently," Coach Eric Mangini said at a news conference.

The Jets gave no other details on the release of Barnes.

The Jets also cut cornerback Manny Collins, who had been on the practice squad. Wide receiver David Ball replaced Collins on the roster.
