ATLANTA, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Chan Gailey, who never had a losing season in six years as football coach of the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, was fired Monday
The announcement was made by Athletic Director Dan Radakovich, who said a search for a new coach would begin immediately. Defensive Coordinator Jon Tenuta will take over as interim head coach. He said the assistant coaches would coach Georgia Tech for its December bowl game.
The Yellowjackets were 44-32 overall under Gailey but were 0-6 against arch-rival Georgia. That includes Saturday's 31-17 loss to the Bulldogs that dropped the Yellowjackets to 7-5 on the season.
Georgia Tech posted 7-5 records in five of Gailey's six seasons. In 2006, the Yellowjackets were 9-5 and lost to Wake Forest in the ACC Championship Game.
Gailey's contract, which reportedly paid the coach about $1 million a year, ran through the 2011 season.
"At the end of the day, my decision was based on whether the football program is moving forward," Radakovich said. "Our fan base, as a whole, is sufficiently excited and energized by its direction.
