COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Texas A&M announced Saturday that defensive coordinator Gary Darnell has been named interim head coach to replace Dennis Franchione.
Franchione announced his resignation Friday after A&M defeated 14th-ranked Texas.
Texas A&M Athletic Director Bill Byrne said Darnell would start preparing the Aggies for a bowl game.
Darnell has served as defensive coordinator for the Aggies the past two seasons. He was head coach at Western Michigan from 1997-2004.
Darnell was the interim head coach at the University of Florida in 1989, posting a 3-4 mark in the final seven games that season. He was also head coach at Tennessee Tech (1983-85).
Franchione led the Aggies to a 7-5 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Big 12 this season. The school announced Franchione accepted a buyout of his contract.
