CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- North Carolina football coach Butch Davis agreed to a one-year extension Wednesday that keeps him under contract through 2014.
The deal needs the approval of UNC's Board of Trustees.
This season, the Tar Heels are 3-8 overall, 2-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with one game left Saturday against archrival Duke.
"My family and I felt like Chapel Hill was the right place last year and are even more convinced after being here for one season," he said in a statement on the school's Web site. "I'm appreciative of the show of support from (Athletic Director) Dick Baddour."
The deal reportedly gives him a $291,000 pay raise, boosting his annual salary over the $2 million mark.
He succeeded the fired John Bunting last November.
"We approached Coach Davis about the possibility of extending and enhancing his contract several weeks ago," Baddour said. "We recognize that we have one of the nation's best coaches and we wanted to ensure the stability of the program."
