Carr resigns as Michigan football coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr resigned Monday after leading the Wolverines to a 121-40 record over 13 seasons.

Carr said he told the team of his decision Sunday night and that he planned to stay on as coach through the Wolverines' bowl game appearance. He is to remain with the school as an associate athletic director.

"I read I'm tired and all that," Carr said. "I'm not tired. I may look tired. I still have a great passion for the game, for the players and the competition. I also know there are some things that I don't have anymore. It's time. That's all I can say."

Michigan finished the season 8-4 with a 14-3 loss to arch-rival Ohio State. It began the season by being upset by Division I-AA power Appalachian State.

Carr's Michigan teams won five Big Ten Conference titles and the 1997 national championship.

He was a member of the Wolverine football staff for 28 years. Prior to becoming head coach, Carr was an assistant for 15 years under Bo Schembechler (1980-89) and Gary Moeller (1990-94).
