Dick Nolan, NFL coach, dies

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Dick Nolan, who coached the San Francisco 49ers to three division titles and whose son currently coaches the team, has died at the age of 75.

Nolan died Sunday at a health facility near Dallas where he was being treated for Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer, family members said.

Current 49ers Coach Mike Nolan missed team practices Friday and Saturday to be with family but was expected to be with the team for Monday's game in Seattle.

Dick Nolan was hired as the San Francisco coach in 1968 and led the team to division titles between 1970 and 1972. He was the NFL coach of the year in 1970. But the team faltered from 1973 to 1975, when he left. He also coached the New Orleans Saints and had a career coaching mark of 69-82-5.

A defensive back as a player, Nolan was a member of Maryland's 1953 national champion football team and played 99 games in the NFL for the New York Giants, including in 1956 when the team won the NFL championship, St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys.
