MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Quarterback Patrick White ran 50 yards for a score with 96 seconds remaining Thursday night, giving No. 6 West Virginia a 38-31 win over Louisville.
White rescued the Mountaineers after they let a 17-point lead get away in the second half.
West Virginia kept its national title hopes alive, improving to 8-1 for the year and to 3-1 in the Big East Conference. The Mountaineers trail Connecticut by a game in the league race.
Louisville fell to 5-5 and 2-3.
White threw two touchdown passes in the first period and was good on 16-of-25 passes for 185 yards without an interception.
But the Mountaineers fumbled the ball away three times, the last of those miscues setting up a 37-yard field goal by Art Carmody that tied the game with 2:10 remaining.
West Virginia was facing second down with eight yards to go when White broke free for his touchdown run.
After the kickoff, Louisville moved the ball out to its own 41-yard line before running out of time.
The Cardinals' Brian Brohm threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns.
