Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
DENVER, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The Denver Broncos Friday waived veteran defensive end Simeon Rice after he signed a one-year, $3 million deal six days before the regular season started.
The 34-year-old, 12-year veteran, a former all-pro, largely was ineffective in six games, and was inactive twice because of lack of production.
In the six games he played, Rice had only 11 tackles, with no sacks, interceptions, or forced fumbles.
He had been seen as a viable replacement when Ebenezer Ekuban went out for the season in August with an Achilles tendon injury, but Denver since has added Josh Mallard, Paul Carrington, and rookie Larry Birdine.
"In the current situation, we felt like we were better with the younger players that we do have," said Coach Mike Shanahan said after Friday's practice. "They gave us the best chance to win (and) that's the direction we're going."
The release made Rice an unrestricted free agent who can sign with another team immediately.
