NEW YORK, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Martin Lel and Paula Radcliffe were the men's and women's winners at Sunday's New York City Marathon.
Radcliffe, a native of England, finished with a winning time of 2:23:32 while running her first marathon in two years.
The world record-holder, who gave birth last January, trained through her pregnancy.
She beat runner-up Gete Wami of Ethiopia, and two-time defending champion Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia finished third.
In the men's race, Lel, from Kenya, outlasted Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri with a time of 2:09:04, with 2004 champion Hendrick Ramaala of Germany third.
Lel and Radcliffe both earned $130,000 top prizes in a race that included nearly 40,000 runners.
The 29-year-old Lel also won this race in 2003.
Sunday's race went on despite the tragic death of long-distance runner Ryan Shay, 28, who collapsed and died Saturday in Central Park at the U.S. men's marathon Olympic trials.
