Andy Reid has no plans to resign

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid said Friday he has no plans to step down despite his ongoing family turmoil.

Reid's sons -- Garrett, 24, and Brett, 22 -- Thursday were sent to jail by Montgomery County (Pa.) Common Pleas Judge Steven T. O'Neill on separate gun-and-drug-related crimes committed on the same day in January.

The Philadelphia News Friday cited a pre-sentencing report prepared by the county's probation department as saying Garrett Reid began selling cocaine in the family's North Philadelphia neighborhood in the summer 2002.

"I know this is a big story for everybody and I respect that," Andy Reid said before practice Friday. "On the other hand, I can't go into questioning about it at this time. As parents we have a huge concern for our boys and this is been a battle that (he and his wife, Tammy) have dealt with here for a few years."

Truex captures NASCAR pole

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Martin Truex Jr. took advantage of a cooler track late in qualifying Friday to win the pole for Sunday's Dickies 500 Nextel Cup race.

It was the first career pole for Truex. He captured it by turning in a lap of 27.964 around the Texas Motor Speedway.

Sunday's race will be the eighth out of 10 events that will determine the Nextel Cup champion. Jeff Gordon owns a nine-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the championship chase.

Gordon had the second-fastest qualifying time, 28.063 seconds. Juan Pablo Montoya and Kevin Harvick will make up the second row.

Johnson, who is on a two-race winning streak, qualified eighth.

The championship battle has turned into a two-driver affair, with Clint Bowyer a distant third, 111 points behind Gordon.

Gordon has never won a race at the Texas Motor Speedway, but did finish second five years ago.

In Friday's second round, Verplank shot 6-under-par 66 to make his 36-hole total 12-under 132.

Ryan Armour (64), Tag Ridings (66) and Stephen Ames (63) share second place at 11-under 133.

Verplank, starting his round on the back nine, charged out of the gate with birdies on three of his first four holes, and six of the nine overall.

He closed the round with nine straight pars.

"I I kind of lost my rhythm a little bit," Verplank said. "It kind of got windier as the day went on and it's a different direction than you normally see around here."

First-round leader J.P. Hayes (69) fell into a tie for fifth with seven others at 10-under 134.

Among those missing the cut was 2003 PGA Champion Shaun Micheel (142).

Tim Duncan signs contract extension

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- San Antonio Spurs superstar Tim Duncan Friday signed a contract extension worth a reported $40 million.

The contract ties Duncan to the defending champion Spurs through the 2011-2012 season.

Duncan, 31, has twice been named the NBA's most valuable player and has been the NBA Finals MVP three times.

"Tim Duncan has established himself as one of the best players in NBA history," San Antonio Coach Gregg Popovich said. "Despite the individual accolades he has attained, what makes him truly great is his dedication to his team.

Report: Sonics apply for relocation

SEATTLE, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Seattle SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett Friday said he is filing with the NBA for permission to move the team to his hometown of Oklahoma City.

The Seattle Times reported Bennett said in a written statement the lack of support for a new arena in Seattle and ongoing financial losses gave team owners "no option but to commence the NBA relocation process."

The report added Bennett's statement was not clear on when the move would be made, but it could be next season if he wins the ongoing court battle to get out of the Sonics' Key Arena lease, or at the end of the lease in 2010.

"Timing could be upon determination of this litigation," he said in an interview with The Oklahoman. "So it could be at the end of this season. It could be at the end of the existing lease term. It could be in between if there is some settlement or negotiation that we both agree to."
