Arbour to coach game No. 1,500 on Saturday

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Hall of Famer Al Arbour will coach the New York Islanders Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins -- giving him 1,500 games as an NHL coach.

Islanders officials said Arbour stop behind the bench would be a one-shot deal and give the coach a change to round off his coaching total at 1,500 regular-season games.

He signed a one-day contract after the Islanders' practice Friday morning.

Arbour compiled a 739-537-223 regular-season record with the Islanders and led them to four straight Stanley Cup championships from 1980-83 before retiring June 1, 1994. He was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996, is second only to Scotty Bowman in career wins with 781.

"For all that the coach has done for our franchise, we are going to give Al and his family a night they will never forget," said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow on the team Web site. "I’m sure we'll create plenty of memories for our team and our fans, too."

The Islanders won a league record 19 straight playoff series during Arbour's tenure.
