QUEBEC CITY, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nicole Vaidisova, despite losing the second set, reached the second round of the Bell Challenge Wednesday when her opponent had to retire.

Vaidisova won the first set over Renata Voracova 6-2 before dropping the second set 3-6. Voracova then had to quit with an undisclosed injury. Vaidisova has not won a tournament this year, but she reached the semifinals in her last two events before falling to Justine Henin and Daniela Hantuchova.

No. 2 seed Vera Zvonareva battled past Severine Bremond 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), while third-seeded Julia Vakulenko won her second-round match over Stephanie Dubois 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The tournament's fourth seed, Meilen Tu, was a 6-2, 6-2 upset victim of Sofia Arvidsson.
