LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming combined for 55 points Tuesday but Shane Battier's three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left sealed Houston's 95-93 win over the LA Lakers.

McGrady fired in 30 points and Ming added 25 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to give Rick Adelman a victory in his Houston coaching debut. Mike James came off the bench to hit for 13 points and Battier finished with 11 points.

Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 45 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter for the Lakers. Derek Fisher scored 17 points, while Bryant and Kwame Brown pulled down eight rebounds each in the loss.

Both teams looked rusty at the onset of the game, missing a combined 10 shots before Bryant finally lit up the scoreboard with a layup. Los Angeles went on to lead 26-16 after the first quarter but Houston pulled to a 43-43 halftime tie and an eight-point margin going into the fourth quarter.
