
PARIS, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer beat American Mardy Fish 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) Tuesday in the second round of the Paris Masters.
Ferrer, the No. 6 player in the ATP 2007 Race for the Masters Cup, next faces Czech Tomas Berdych, who beat Croatia's Mario Ancic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Russian Mikhail Youzhny posted an upset over seventh-seeded Fernando Gonzalez" class="tpstyle">Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Eighth seed Tommy Robredo needed more than two hours to defeat Gilles Simon" class="tpstyle">Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Germany Tommy Haas beat Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3; and 11th seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina defeated Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
There is a battle for the final two spots for the season-ending Shanghai Masters. That tournament, which starts Nov. 11, includes the top eight players in the world.
