Zvonareva, Vakulenko first-round winners

QUEBEC CITY, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva and third-seeded Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko were first-round winners Monday at the Bell Challenge in Canada.

Zvonareva defeated Colombia's Catalina Castano 6-2, 6-4, while Vakulenko beat Paraguay's Rossana de los Rios 6-2, 6-0. Zvonareva missed nearly five months of action this year due to a wrist injury. Vakulenko reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open this year.

Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak beat American Ashley Harkleroad 6-4, 6-2, and fifth seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus beat Argentine Jorgelina Cravero 6-4, 6-3.

American Lindsay Davenport meets seventh-seeded German Angelique Kerber Tuesday.
