HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Kellen Clemens has been named the starting quarterback for the New York Jets, effective with Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.

He replaces Chad Pennington, who had been listed first on the Jets' depth chart since the fourth week of the 2002 season when Pennington took over for Vinny Testaverde.

"I talked to Chad, I talked to Kellen and I talked to the team," Jets Coach Eric Mangini said Monday. "And moving into Sunday, Kellen will be the starting quarterback."

Sunday will mark Clemens' second start in 2007. He filled in for an injured Pennington the second week of the season against Baltimore. Clemens completed 19-of-37 passes or 260 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a 20-13 loss.

He also saw action in Sunday's 13-3 loss to Buffalo. New York is 1-7 on the season. Only the 0-8 Miami Dolphins have a worse record in the AFC.
