NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Philadelphia defenseman Randy Jones was suspended for two games by the NHL for a hit on Boston's Patrice Bergeron.
It is expected that Jones will miss the Flyers' games Thursday in Montreal and Friday at home against Washington. He will also be docked two games' pay -- $5,614.98 -- which will be placed in the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Late in the first period of Philadelphia's game last Saturday against the Bruins, Jones elbowed Bergeron on the back of the head and checked him face-first into the glass. Bergeron was knocked unconscious and taken off the ice on a stretcher. Examinations at a hospital revealed no additional damage to his head or neck.
Jones was given a five-minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct at the time of the incident.
NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell on Monday said, "While it is my determination that Jones did not intend to injure his opponent, he did deliver a hard check to a player who was in a vulnerable position."
